On a day when some of his former teammates plan a trip to the White House, former star tight end Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his cell.
Five days after his acquittal for a double homicide charge, Hernandez was found in his single cell with a bed sheet tied around his neck hanging from his cell window.
Hernandez was serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of Odin Lloyd, in 2013.
Hernandez was 27 years old.
The statement from the Massachusetts Department of Corrections reads: The 27-year old former New England Patriots tight end hanged himself with a bed sheet attached to a window in his cell at the Souza Baranowski prison in Shirley. His body was discovered at 3:05 am. Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 am.
The fourth round pick of the Patriots in 2010 draft, Hernandez had just signed a five year contract extension in 2012 worth $40 million dollars.
In 2013 a jogger found the body of Lloyd, dead from multiple gunshots. Nine days after the body was found Hernandez was charged with the murder. The Patriots released him within the hour of his arrest.
