Detroit’s Kevin Smith made a case that he should be the lead guy with Jahvid Best out. His 153.57 Rusher Rating led all Week 11 rushers. LeGarrette Blount (134.16 Rusher Rating) and Ray Rice (134.09) round out the top three.

LeSean McCoy still retains the season lead on overall Rusher Rating. Adrian Peterson, while limited to six carries after being injured, hold on to second place. Ray Rice rounds out the top three with a season Rusher Rating of 117.22.

Situational Statistics

We continue to follow the three running backs featured in the Week 10 Rusher Rating article here on CHFF: McCoy, Peterson and Jackson.

It looks like the Eagles wanted to pound McCoy to the right side of the line and his 7.71 yards-per-carry shows that the Eagles saw something they wanted to exploit. Over the season, the right side was McCoy’s weaker side, but he was able to gain yards against the Arizona defense.

Peterson tired pounding the ball through the center of the line, as he had all season, against the Packers and he had some success. His 5 carries for 30 yards (6.00 yards-per-carry) gave him a rusher rating of 85.70. Overall, he has 5.37 yards-per-carry on his 70 carries through the center of the line and an overall Rusher Rating of 125.58. His redzone production continues to be excellent with a Rusher Rating of 123.39.

Jackson fumbled for the second consecutive week. As a result, he continued to drop in the overall season rankings. However, he has improved his yards-per-carry on the left side of the line, as well as his Rusher Ratings. But, his fumble hurt the left tackle running lane numbers. He dropped from a 135.40 Rusher Rating to a 109.27.

Here are the numbers for all three backs through week 10 of the regular season:

Real Running Back Rating

As we discussed last week, the missing component to the Rusher Rating System is the receiving component. With this final component, we now have a Real Running Back Rating. Looking at the season leaders (based on Rusher Rating) through Week 11 of the NFL regular season (minimum 135 attempts) we have the following (Listed by Real Running Back Rating):

Player Receptions Receiving Yards Receiving TD Rusher Rating Real RB Rating Diff.
Adrian Peterson – MIN 16 125 1 124.31 109.43 -14.88
Arian Foster – HOU 31 445 2 107.32 109.32 +2.00
LeSean McCoy – PHI 34 198 2 129.21 107.72 -21.49
Ray Rice – BAL 51 513 2 117.22 95.67 -21.55
Fred Jackson – BUF 39 442 0 108.28 83.53 -24.75
Steven Jackson – STL 23 137 1 98.86 82.83 -16.03
Michael Turner – ATL 10 124 0 105.08 80.58 -24.50
Rashard Mendenhall – PIT 11 77 0 108.85 75.84 -33.01
Chris Wells – ARI 6 25 0 105.50 72.58 -32.92
Frank Gore – SF 15 92 0 96.20 70.12 -26.08

Adrian Peterson has a slight lead over Arian Foster in Real Running Back Rating. With Peterson’s injury and Foster having the only improvement when receiving stats are factored in, it would not be suprising to have Foster take the lead next week.

Rusher Rating Differential

San Francisco still leads in Rusher Rating Differential. Their Defensive Rusher Rating is the best in the league, lead by the fact that they have still not allowed a rushing touchdown all season. Baltimore retains the second spot with a Rusher Rating differential of 25.81. That sets up a great matchup Thanksgiving night as San Francisco visits Baltimore.

Here are all 32 teams ranked, based on Rusher Rating Differential, for the season:

How the Rusher Rating is Calculated

Here is how each component is calculated:

Average Yards Gained per Attempt (YD) = [Total Yards/(4.05 * Rushing Attempts)]

Percentage of TDs per Carry (TD) = [(39.5*Touchdowns)/Rushing Attempts]

Percentage of Fumbles per Carry (F) = [2.375-((21.5*Fumbles)/Rushing Attempts)]

Adding these components together and adjusting to a scale of 158.3 (the same as the NFL Passer Rating System) yields:

Rusher Rating = [(YD) + (TD) + (F)] * (100/4.5)

How the Real Running Back Rating is Calculated

Now, we look at the Real Running Back Rating. Here are the updated equations with the receiving components:

Average Yards Gained per Attempt (YD) = [Total Yards/(4.05 * Rushing Attempts)]

Percentage of TDs per Carry (RUSHTD) = [(39.5*Touchdowns)/Rushing Attempts]

Average Yards Gained per Reception (REC) = [Receiving Yards/(9*Receptions)]

Percentage of TDs per Reception (RECTD) = [(27.5*Touchdowns)/Receptions]

Percentage of Fumbles per Touch (F) = [2.375-((21.5*Fumbles)/(Rushes + Receptions))]

Adding these components together and adjusting to a scale of 158.3 yields:

Rusher Rating = [(YD) + (RUSHTD) + (REC) + (RECTD) + (F)] * (100/7.5)
